15 Types Of Workers Living Off Tips

Shelling out a tip might not seem like a big deal to you, but to many workers, it makes a world of difference.

Take waiters. More than half of their income on average comes from tips, according to a new study by PayScale, a website that analyzes compensation data. And they're not alone, with bartenders, valets and, yes, exotic dancers not far behind.

Lots of people don't really care. In fact, 39 percent of Americans didn't give a holiday tip last December, according to a survey by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. The most common reason given for skipping holiday tipping? A tight budget.

Of course, not everyone is equally likely to get a tip, and the survey found it's housecleaners that were most likely to receive a couple extra holiday bucks last year -- perhaps a tad ironically, given that they don't rely on them much.

Check out the types of workers that rely the most on tips below:

Adkins explains Confederate flag earpiece

NEW YORK (AP) ? Trace Adkins wore an earpiece decorated like the Confederate flag when he performed for the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting but says he meant no offense by it.

Adkins appeared with the earpiece on a nationally televised special for the lighting on Wednesday. Some regard the flag as a racist symbol and criticized Adkins in Twitter postings.

But in a statement released Thursday, the Louisiana native called himself a proud American who objects to any oppression and says the flag represents his Southern heritage.

He noted he's a descendant of Confederate soldiers and says he did not intend offense by wearing it.

Adkins ? on a USO tour in Japan ? also called for the preservation of America's battlefields and an "honest conversation about the country's history."

'Dwarf': Undergoing Controversial Lengthening Surgeries

Tiffanie DiDonato said everything she has ever wished for has come true: a handsome husband, loving friends and a new baby. But most of her childhood dreams play out in simple, everyday victories, like taking out the trash or driving.

DiDonato, 32, was born with diastrophic dysplasia, a rare form of dwarfism. The condition left her with a "typical size" torso, but abnormally short arms and legs. By the time she was in middle school, she was only three-and-a-half feet tall.

Watch the full story on "Nightline" tonight at 11:35 p.m. ET

Growing up in Marlborough, Mass., DiDonato fantasized about being tall enough to grab something off the grocery store shelf, cook on the stove, take out the trash and drive a car, but almost everything was out of reach.

But that all changed when DiDonato endured an excruciating and controversial series of limb-lengthening surgeries, which breaks bones and forces them to re-grow longer. It was a decision she made when she was very young, knowing that it would have risks and rewards with a lifetime of consequences.

At age 8, DiDonato had her first surgery to lengthen her arms and gain four inches of height.

"When I woke up, when it hurt so much, you freeze it, almost like if you scream it is going to hurt worse," she said. "All you can do is kind of let the tears fall and deal with it and suck it up and let it ride."

When she was 15, DiDonato decided to have the surgery again. Ignoring the recommended maximum of four inches, she and her doctor decided not to put a cap on her growth. Her mother, who raised her to be a fierce fighter, said she supported her daughter's decision.

"It was all about independence," Robin DiDonato said. "It was doing things on her own, brushing her own hair. My biggest fear was her being dependent on others for her care because, let's face it, Gerry and I won't be around forever."

Her father, Gerry DiDonato, said he told her she didn't need to have the surgery, and it was torture to him to watch his daughter suffer.

"It was very nerve-racking," he said. "She would cry it out. It was tough ? it's horrible."

But Robin never wavered. She said she didn't let herself cry in front of her daughter, even during the most gut-wrenching days.

"I was not going to because if I broke, maybe she would have too, maybe she would have stopped," Robin said. "Who knows what she would have done. I think she needed me to be strong for her."

After her second surgery, Tiffanie DiDonato gained an unprecedented 10 inches of additional height, putting her at 4-foot-10 -- right on the cusp of little-person status. She kept a journal, which she said helped her get through the painful process.

"I was honest with myself, if I wanted to die, if I felt like that's what I wanted to do, then I wrote it down," she said.

Her journal was turned into a memoir she defiantly titled "Dwarf." In it, DiDonato chronicles her "no pain, no gain" view of life and how surprisingly grateful she is for the experience.

"If you go through a struggle, if you know what sacrifice is, and you have felt a little pain, it makes you that much braver," she said. "It makes you a little bit more aware."

DiDonato is now married to Eric Gabrielse, a nearly-six-foot-tall Marine, and they recently welcomed a baby boy.

"She's so powerful and strong," Gabrielse said of his wife. "Being in the military, you need somebody that one, can be independent, but two, can be extremely supportive and because everything she's gone through, she's been through her own battles, so she knows exactly how to support me through mine."

Controversy Around Lengthening Surgeries

We first met DiDonato four years ago when she and Gabrielse were about to tie the knot. After her story aired, she caught flack for her lengthening surgeries from critics who said The Little People of America organization doesn't support the risky procedures.

Reza Garakani was also born with dwarfism and said he regrets that his father pushed him to have the lengthening surgery back in the '80s. He was 12.

"I did not want to undergo the painful procedure which, in my mind, I was worried that, what if this fails," he said. "For a few inches, I didn't want to damage my life. I was happy with who I am."

Unlike DiDonato, Garakani said the surgery left him paralyzed.

"Because of this procedure, I lost a major part of me," he said. "Before I was just an average dwarf. I could run around, I could play sports, I could swim and do things. Now, I can't do what I was able to do. I would have rather been three feet tall than be a few inches tall with all the complications."

Even DiDonato's father, who still has mixed feelings about the surgery, said it may have taken a physical toll on his daughter.

"Personally, I feel she lost a little mobility with the extreme lengthening," he said. "I'll always remember her with her little jeans on chasing a ball, but she feels good about herself and that's the most important thing."

But DiDonato said she was well aware of the risks from the start and has no regrets. It seems to have paid off. Being a new mom and the wife of a Marine, she seems to personify the Marine's fighting philosophy: Adapt and overcome.

"Having a baby, every day I'm adapting and overcoming, but I kind of feel like that's for every parent," she said. "Every mom, every dad, you have to take the punches as they come."

Nate Diaz worried about judges? decision in fight with Benson Henderson

Nate Diaz is fighting Benson Henderson at UFC on Fox 6, and he has taken the idea "don't leave it in the hands of the judges" to a whole new level. He does not think he can win if it is put in the judges' hands.

"I don't think I've got a chance of winning any type of decision. So I gotta go out there and do what I can do to try and finish my opponent, try to be the better fighter and win the fight," said Diaz said to Inside MMA. "Either way, if it goes to a decision, I'm going to try to be the one outscoring, outpointing and outdoing him."

Winning by a finish is a pretty tough feat for Diaz to accomplish. Henderson has never been knocked out. He lost once by submission and once by a decision. The submission loss was in 2007. Since then, he's been in some tricky spots but hasn't tapped. In both fights against Donald Cerrone and in fighting Jim Miller, Henderson was memorably stuck in positions which seemed close to a submission. But instead of tapping, Henderson would give the thumbs up and went on to win all three fights.

Decisions in bouts with Henderson are also a likely occurrence. His last six fights were decisions, with five ending with Henderson getting his hand raised. Diaz isn't as successful in decisions, so you could see why he might be nervous. Of his seven losses, six are by decision. Only two of his 13 wins came via the judges' card.

Should Diaz be concerned? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Google acquires couponfocused Incentive Targeting for undisclosed sum

While not offering too much in the way of specifics, Google said in a statement that "we look forward to working with Incentive Targeting in our ongoing efforts to help consumers save time and money and enable retailers deliver relevant discounts to the right customers." For its part, Incentive Targeting has said that it "set out to do for retail couponing what Google had done for online advertising: make it simple, relevant, measurable, and effective," and to that end it has developed a variety of tools for retailers and manufacturers alike, all designed to deliver coupons and discounts in a more targeting manner. Italian tax police probe Google Italy again

ROME (Reuters) - Italian police launched a new tax probe into Google Italy this week after earlier investigations found the group had failed to declare income and still owed sales tax, an economy ministry document showed on Wednesday.

The earlier probe, which was launched by Italian financial police in 2007, found that Google had developed a system to transfer profits from its Italian operations to Ireland so it could benefit from a more favorable tax regime.

The investigation is the Internet search giant's latest entanglement with European tax authorities, following problems in France and Britain over its Irish strategy.

In Italy, investigations of the years 2002-2006 found that Google had failed to declare at least 240 million euros ($310 million) of income to authorities and owed more than 96 million euros in sales tax, according to the ministry's response to questions in parliament.

It said police had launched a new probe on Monday to check the company was meeting its fiscal obligations in Italy.

Google said in a statement that it complies with tax law in every country in which it operates.

"We are confident we comply with Italian law," a spokeswoman said, adding the firm would cooperate with authorities and answer any questions for the investigation.

Italian officials have stepped up tax surveillance and collection efforts in recent months as part of government efforts to bring Italy's huge public debt under control.

Police have also been assessing the practices of other multinational online businesses who are managing to shift profits made in Italy into countries where they can pay less tax, the ministry said.

Is Powerball a Mug's Game?

Wednesday?s $500 million (and growing) Powerball jackpot will have ticket holders in 42 states holding their breath. If you buy a lottery ticket this week in hope of hitting it big, are you a foolish romantic or a canny statistician? Back in 2001, mathematician Jordan Ellenberg used pencil and paper to defend his own choice to buy tickets for a $280 million Powerball drawing. His original article is reprinted below.

Were you stupid not to play?

I don't have to ask myself; I played. My father and his Ph.D. in statistics put me in for a 20 percent share of his four tickets. But I got enough razzing from friends and neighbors that I thought it was worth explaining why, from a mathematician's point of view, last Saturday's drawing wasn't necessarily dumb.

The question to ask is: What is the expected value of a lottery ticket? If the expected value is more than a dollar, and the ticket costs a dollar, you should buy a ticket. If the expected value is less than a dollar, you should keep your money.

"Expected value" doesn't just mean "what do you expect?" After all, you probably expect the ticket to be worth nothing. Yet people don't think lottery tickets are worthless; if they did, they wouldn't buy them. "Expected value" as I mean it here is a mathematical definition that assigns a fixed value to an object whose true value is subject to uncertainty.

Suppose an object might be worth either V1 or V2 dollars, and suppose the probability is P1 that it is worth V1, and P2 that it is worth V2. Then the expected value is defined to be

For instance, suppose you place a bet on a horse that has a 1/10 chance of winning, and the bet pays $100. Then the probability is (1/10) that your ticket will be worth $100 and (9/10) that your ticket will be worth nothing. So, the expected value of the ticket is

(1/10) x $100 + (9/10) x 0 = $10.

Why is $10 a good definition of the value of the ticket? Because if you spent a week at the track and bought, say, 250 such tickets, you'd probably end up winning about 25 times; you'd make $2,500, or $10 per ticket. So, if you were paying more than $10 for each ticket, you'd be a loser; less, and you'd be a winner.

So, what's the expected value of a Powerball ticket? Here's a wrong argument I heard a lot. People who knew the jackpot odds figured: "I've got a 1 in 80 million chance at $280 million, so the expected value is

(1/80 million) x $280 million + (79,999,999/80 million) x 0 = $3.50.

The problem with that argument is that we weren't playing for the $280 million. We were playing for our share of the $280 million, thanks to the possibility of multiple winners. If I win the Powerball, the chance is pretty good that somebody else is going to win, too. Already my jackpot's down to $140 million. And the more people who play, the more the prize will tend to divvy up. If, as happened in real life this week, four people win, you're looking at just $70 million.

So how many people could you expect to share the prize with? I worked this out (requires Adobe Acrobat). The chance of no winner is about 8 percent; of one winner, 21 percent; of two, 26 percent; of three, 21 percent; of four, 13 percent; of five or more, 9 percent. So Saturday's fourfold victory was a bit of a surprise but not a real shocker. A Powerball enthusiast suggested to me that people are especially fond of picking lucky 21 on the red ball and that this could explain the large number of winners. But in fact, Powerball records show that the number of people who picked 21 on the red ball was only half a percentage point greater than would have been expected by chance. That's not enough to make a serious difference.

Harrisburg bankruptcy threat back on the table as ... - Financial Post

Harrisburg: A bankrupt city at war with itself

For three days last summer, Mayor Linda Thompson joined religious leaders to pray for a ?cooperative spirit? among city leaders, the business community and residents here in Pennsylvania?s state capital.

The prayers have gone unanswered.

Looking for a way to resolve US$300-million in debt, the city council defied Thompson and voted to file for bankruptcy this month. Not only did a majority of the council go against the mayor?s wishes, but the council members also decided not to even tell her of their decision.

Harrisburg, Pa. ? Pennsylvania?s capital city Harrisburg, neck-deep in more than US$340-million debt, is on the verge of getting a powerful negotiating tool with creditors: the threat of bankruptcy.

A state ban that prevented Harrisburg from filing for municipal bankruptcy protection is set to expire after Nov. 30.

A year has passed since Harrisburg first tried filing for bankruptcy in October 2011. The city is now deeper in debt and there is no guarantee that it will not seek court protection once again.

?They?re still having a problem bridging the revenues and the liabilities they have to pay,? said Emanuel Grillo, chair of the financial restructuring group at the law firm Goodwin Procter.

?They haven?t gotten bondholders or other constituencies to take a big enough hit,? he said. ?Waiving the bankruptcy option out there is really an important tool, even if [the state-appointed receiver] never uses it.?

When Harrisburg first attempted bankruptcy protection, the cash-starved city became a poster child for U.S. cities still trying to recover from years of lower, recession-hit property tax revenues while faced with growing pension obligations, healthcare costs, salaries and other expenses.

Since last October, Harrisburg?s debt has swelled from US$300-million to US$340-million

Harrisburg, like some other cities, took out significant debt to finance a project ? an incinerator ? that later failed to make enough money, bringing it to the verge of financial collapse.

Since last October, Harrisburg?s debt has swelled from US$300-million to US$340-million.

Its receiver, William Lynch, had to skip a US$3.4-million general obligation debt service payment in September in order to pay city employees. Harrisburg still faces a projected cumulative deficit of US$14.8-million by the end of fiscal 2012.

Harrisburg is closer to selling some assets such as its trash incinerator and public parking system to raise money as a key component of its recovery plan, Still, any potential agreement with buyers must still be approved by the state court overseeing the plan.

LAWMAKERS NOT LIKELY TO EXTEND BAN

The capital city accumulated its mountain of debt during several rounds of multimillion-dollar bond deals to finance the repair and retrofit of its incinerator.

About two weeks after Harrisburg?s city council first filed the bankruptcy petition, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett declared a state of fiscal emergency for the city of nearly 50,000 residents, about a third of them living in poverty.

A federal judge later blocked the city council?s Chapter 9 petition after state lawmakers banned it. Urged on by veteran Republican state lawmaker Jeff Piccola, the Pennsylvania legislature later extended the ban.

Piccola represented Dauphin County, which guaranteed some of Harrisburg?s incinerator debt and is now one of the city?s creditors.

But with Piccola retiring and a Democrat taking his place, many city and state officials believe state lawmakers won?t extend the ban a second time ? especially since state lawmakers are not scheduled to consider any new legislation until January.

?The lack of threat from Senator Piccola and the legislature to reinstate the bankruptcy ban is going to be an effective tool for negotiations. There?s no doubt about it,? said Harrisburg City Councilman Brad Koplinski.

CREDITOR PRESSURE

Lynch ? the only one who can put the city into bankruptcy ? has said he should be allowed to do so if he needs to.

Bankruptcy ?is an option that needs to be on the table,? said Cory Angell, a spokesman for Lynch, who was unavailable for comment.

The threat of bankruptcy could get creditors, including bond insurer Assured Guaranty Municipal Corporation, or AGM, to return to negotiations and consider forgiving as much as a third of the city?s debt.

Harrisburg skipped several incinerator debt service payments due in September, leaving AGM to cover the US$1.4-million in payments.

Altogether, AGM has US$155.2-million of net par exposure to Harrisburg and had paid out US$8.6-million as of June 30 on claims.

The bond insurer declined to comment on the expiration of the city?s bankruptcy ban.

AGM, along with creditors TD Bank and bondholder trustee M&T Bank, won county court approval in March for a separate receiver, who oversees the cash flow of Harrisburg?s incinerator and operate independently of Lynch.

Attempting to implement the recovery plan is an important step in case the city does go bankrupt, so that it can show it tried other remedies before asking a court for relief from creditors, according to Angell.

?I think if we were to go into a bankruptcy situation, of course that court is going to ask you what have you done to meet your obligations and I think the answer to that should be we?ve tried to implement this recovery plan,? Angell said.

Pixlr Express leads Android Apps of the Week

Android photographers of the world, rejoice! A new professional-grade photo editor entered the fold; Pixlr Express boasts a crazy number of features and tools. When you're done editing your photos, we've got new ways to send them to people, plus new ways to avoid getting lost in a dead zone, new ways to track big savings, and new ways to keep your LinkedIn profile up to date. Despite all that new, there's a lot of old fashioned to be found in this week's list.

Photography editing apps may not exactly be an endangered species, but that doesn't mean we can't sit up and pay attention when a new one comes along. Especially when that new editor comes from a company as titanic and gargantuan as Autodesk. Pixlr Express struts its stuff with some very impressive assets to show off, including filters, auto-fixes, lighting and coloring adjustments, overlays, and many more. Hundreds more in fact, as the app claims to offer 600 different effects. If you're one of those Android photographers who loves professional-grade editing software, this may be your new mistress.

When you're done editing your photographic masterpieces with Pixlr Express, you can use this app to have prints of them mailed directly to your door. I know, right? It sounds so quaint. It's kind of poetic that in the age of digital and Internet bytes that a brand spanking new app would offer such an old fashioned service. Once you pick the size of your photos and fill out an order, you simply pay and enter a shipping address, making this a great way to send photos as gifts. In the short term, it is quite a bit cheaper than buying a professional photo printer.

Speaking of quaint, old fashioned ideas in a world bustling with technology...When's the last time you read a map to get somewhere? People always say they'd be lost in this world without their smartphones. Particularly if they're in the middle of nowhere with no signal or Internet connection to use Google Maps! Well now you can download and archive dozens of maps, and you won't feel nearly as lost. Like many map apps, you can plan routes and input coordinates, searching the local area for attractions when you DO have wifi, and add those places to your favorites.

Finally LinkedIn, the go-to website for professional networking, gives us all the option to edit our profiles and settings on the go from within the mobile app. If I ever actually remembered to update my LinkedIn profile, I'm sure I would love this new feature! But when it comes to keeping your profile up to date, especially while you're walking the grounds of a conference or convention, where a lot of business cards are being handed out, this new feature offers a lot of convenience! The update also brought push notifications among other general improvements to the table.

Woot.com has built a legion of users through their really impressive daily deals, with plenty of sibling sites rising up in the process. Now, with this mobile app dedicated to Woot, you can monitor all of those sites and the many deals with ease through a solid interface. You can also more easily rub your savings in a friend or family members face through social networking capabilities. Or you could just share those deals with them instead. Either or. Definitely keep an eye out for a "Woot Off," which is a 24 hour blitzkrieg period of deal bombardments that shouldn't be missed.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11 goes on sale early with a momentary price break

Image

So you like what you've heard about the IdeaPad Yoga 13, but still don't relish the prospect of trying to wield a 13-inch Ultrabook (and its matching high price) as a convertible tablet. Not to fear: Lenovo has started taking orders for the system's smaller cousin, the IdeaPad Yoga 11, a few weeks ahead of its planned December launch. The foldable, 11.6-inch Windows RT machine is available to buy in 32GB and 64GB models that cost more than expected in regular pricing, at $849 and $949 respectively, with post-Thanksgiving discounts that whittle those figures down to a more reasonable $679 and $759. Don't count on an early ship date, by any means -- Lenovo is quoting "more than 4 weeks" as of this writing -- but do expect to secure a place in line for what's arguably the least conventional of the ARM-based Windows PCs we've seen so far.

Philosophy Essay: How Has Popular Recreation Influenced Sport ...

How has usual recreation influenced sport and pas durations in the 21st century? Popular recreation was pre-industrial sports and pastimes mainly associated with the peasant/lower class. This could as well refer to popular past times at that time. Pre industrial popular recreation accurately reflected society and life in pre industrial Britain. The diverse activities and sports were supported by a stark class system (The feudal system) several(prenominal)times they shared activities such as cock conflict, sometimes they took part in different activities, mob football was predominately lower class and past time such as lawn tennis were upper class. In some cases the different classes had different roles within the sport, for example in search the upper class would take part in the tangible hunt and the lower class would organise the dogs and tend to the animals. utter(a) knuckle pugilism Bare knuckle encase was a popular sport that has heavily influenced modern day boxing. Like some pre industrial past times bare knuckle boxing was simple with very primitive methods, had very some rules and was crimson which reflected the harsh eighteenth century rural life. It was one of few sports in which upper and lower classes were involved.

Some members of the gentry sponsored a lower class fighter and they became their jock. The patron would arrange the contest, charge up a stake or wager nones and give board and lodging to the performer. The fighters were usually from very poor people background and this gave them a chance to earn money fame and status. The patron however did this for prestige and popularity. Modern day boxing is sympathetic in many ways to bare knuckle boxing; there are accepted rules such as not striking a downed opponent, In 1853 London prize fighting ring rules were introduced which stated that fights had to take place in a 24 feet square ring, if the fighter was knocked down he had 30 seconds to rise to his feet and biting, head butting and hitting below the belt were declared... Tablets 2012: Even with competition, iPad hangs onto crown

8 hrs.

Non-iPads from Amazon, Google, Microsoft and others are flooding the market, bringing more diverse experiences, often at better prices than the iPad and its little sibling, the iPad Mini.

Doesn?t matter. Odds are, you?ll still ask Santa for an Apple tablet. And new research suggests Apple iPads large and small will dominate this rapidly growing business, at least through 2013.

OK OK, you're thinking, "Thanks for the newsflash, fanboy." But seriously, in a universe where shoppers operate on cold logic and ever-tightening budgets, the iPad should fall under the wheels of Android any minute now, the same thing that happened with smartphones. So how does Apple maintain its grip?

It's not design or ease of use. Although they surely contribute to customer loyalty, they're not enormous differentiators any more. (Don?t believe me? Ask Apple?s patent lawyers.)

So what?s the answer? Tablets aren?t smartphones and they?re not PCs. While the Android camp waited for a bounce?from the successful phone business, and Microsoft and the computer vendors groped for a bridge between PCs and tablets, Apple made this middle ground the iPad's kingdom.

Heated competition
In the fall of 2011, when Amazon and Barnes & Noble axed their tablet prices down to under $200, Apple held its $499 starting point.

Logic suggested that the iPad would lose its lead, or at least, its majority. The non-Apple upstarts did see spikes in shipments over the 2011 holiday quarter, according to NPD DisplaySearch, a top global research firm. But by mid-2012, Apple was once again shipping over two thirds of the world?s tablets.

This fall, the non-iPads redoubled their attack. Asus and Samsung teamed up with Google to create Nexus-branded 7-inch and 10-inch tablets (respectively). Amazon multiplied its Kindle Fire by three, and dropped the entry-level 7-inch tablet's price down to $159. Barnes & Noble launched a video service and put out a 9-inch tablet at the unheard-of price of $269.

Meanwhile, Microsoft, the sleeping giant, finally addressed the bite iPad is taking out of PC sales by launching its own tablet. Or is it a PC? Whatever it is ? and believe me, the debate still rages ? the $499 Surface RT with its clever keyboard add-on and its full version of Microsoft Office was built to challenge the notion that an iPad can satisfy most computerly needs.

Apple's response to the increased competition made sense ... sort of. It jacked up the specs on its flagship 9.7-inch tablet, and addressed the growing interest in 7-inch tablets by popping out the iPad Mini, a 7.9-inch model. But Apple priced the Mini at $329 ? well above devices from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Google. And the screen on the Mini doesn't measure up, resolution-wise, to those same cheaper competitors.

Again, doesn?t matter.

Apple ? or at least, the 9.7-inch and 7.9-inch displays unique to Apple ? will account for two thirds of tablets shipped through 2013, according to a forecast from NPD DisplaySearch, which uses research from over 140 display component manufacturers around the globe.

A recent study from Nielsen tells a similar story, at least for kids writing letters to Santa. Nearly half of surveyed U.S. kids between the ages of 6 and 12 want an iPad, and 36 percent want an iPad Mini. Even respondents age 13 and up said the iPad was No. 1. (While a ?Tablet computer other than iPad? also rated relatively highly, the only specific non-iPad to reach double-digit demand in either survey was the Kindle Fire.)

What tablets aren?t
Unlike smartphones, there is no inherent reason to buy a tablet. (Don?t kid yourself.) People must rationalize their $499 iPad purchase, and here's how they do it: "We just need something to use in the family room and kitchen," or "We just need something to take on trips," or "We just need an extra computer for the kids."

Most if not all tablet households already have a PC, so people don't need to use an iPad to set up their routers, archive their photos or whatever else a full-blown PC might be especially good for. What an iPad does is fulfill the needs of a secondary computer, without the hassle.

While tablets can replace PCs, they aren't PCs, and thank God for that.

Even in the business world, this PC replacement is gaining momentum. This past week, Barclays Bank made news by buying 8,500 iPads for use in branches, what is being called the biggest purchase of the tablets by a financial services firm.

"On the business side ??and on the consumer side ? it's about the apps,? says Paul Semenza, senior vice president of?analyst services for NPD?DisplaySearch, whose firm has identified that tablets are eating into PC sales. Enterprise-focused apps by the likes of Salesforce, Cisco and Oracle mean that an iPad can provide a convenient way to do highly specialized work quickly on a touchscreen, "rather than having to crack open the notebook."

In confirming the iPad as ?winner and still champ,? Consumer Reports? Jeffrey Fox also cites apps: "With dozens of Android-based models nipping at its heels, the iPad managed to not only hold its own, but up the ante for performance. When you add to that the breadth and quality of its apps, the iPad is still the tablet to beat."

Apple?s commanding lead in tablet-friendly apps ? over 275,000 built specifically for the iPad?s larger screens, versus the underwhelming handful?of tablet-specific apps?available in the?Google Play store ? helps keep it on top. A key reason for the App Store?s initial success is that Apple has its customers trained to spend money, something Google has never really been able to do. When developers release iPad apps, they expect to get paid by the download; to spend time and money bringing the same app to another platform, they must first calculate the risks and rewards.

This can be a vicious circle: If nobody's paying for Android tablet?apps, new ones won't be quick to show up, and then nobody will buy the tablets ... because of a lack of apps. Google has revamped its Google Play store, combining apps with movies and music, in?the hope that at least some customers would?start paying for some content.

Engage!
But there's more to it than just numbers: There?s increasing evidence that iOS users are far more engaged than Android users. NetMarketShare data reported in Fortune last June say that the share of mobile Internet usage for iOS had reached 62 percent, while the far greater population of Android devices hadn?t quite reached 20 percent.

A fresh study by IBM takes it further: Nearly 10 percent of all online shopping over Black Friday was done on iPads, beating "any other tablet or smartphone," says the tech firm. iPhones made up 8.7 percent, while Android was down at 5.5 percent. The so-called ?iPad Factor? is even more pronounced when compared to other tablets: It represented 88.3 percent of tablet online shopping, followed by the Barnes & Noble Nook at 3.1 percent, Amazon Kindle at 2.4 percent and the Samsung Galaxy at 1.8 percent, says IBM's press release.

And that's why makers of Android tablets should be afraid, because when it comes to tablets, the desire for engagement must precede the tablet purchase.

Amazon and Barnes & Noble have had more luck than other non-Apple tablets in grabbing market share, at least in short bursts, because their tablets come with a built-in sales argument: Buy this to enjoy books and videos to your heart's content.

Amazon has the added advantage of customers who spend so frequently that they keep their credit cards on file, and enough revenues that it can sell tablets at cost, hoping to see profits through media sales.

But while the $70-per-year Amazon Prime video service is nice, its library is not as nice as the omnipresent Netflix's, and the service itself has a large base of customers who signed up for shipping perks, not streaming TV shows.

Most importantly, Amazon makes most of its digital products available on competing iPads, too. The customer's dilemma becomes: "Do I go cheap and get an Amazon-focused experience? Or do I spend more for a broader platform that includes Amazon's services and a lot more?" Apple may push its own services pretty hard, but the flowering of the App Store means that the iPad has become a crossroads of Internet experiences.

All of these factors mean that the iPad,?this expensive-ish not-quite-a-PC that was laughed at when it launched in 2010,?will hold onto its crown for the foreseeable future, as alternatives continue to scramble for relevance. In the smartphone world, someone shopping for an iPhone may well settle for a cheaper Android phone. Yet when it comes to tablets, someone who decides not to buy an iPad may simply choose nothing at all.

Sacombank loans for price stabilization program - SaigonMoney.com

A representative of Sacombank?s Cu Chi District branch (R) exchanges a credit agreement with Phu Loc Agriculture, Trading and Service Co-op in HCMC yesterday - Photo: Minh Tam

Traders, trading households and companies joining the price stabilization program in HCMC can borrow money from Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Bank (Sacombank) with an annual preferential rate of 10% over a period of six months to one year.
According to the lender, the total amount of its preferential loans is VND1 trillion which is effective until January 31, 2013 or until when the amount is used up.

The special credit package primarily targets enterprises joining the city?s price stabilization program for a maximum lending period of six months with an interest rate of 10% annually for the first three months.

Six corporate members of the program on Tuesday inked credit agreements with Sacombank branches under the witness of Le Ngoc Dao, deputy director of the city?s Department of Industry and Trade serving as the program?s organizer, and deputy director Nguyen Hoang Minh of the central bank?s HCMC Branch.

Meanwhile, trading households and vendors at traditional markets in the city are also able to gain access to the bank?s low-interest loans when meeting requirements, with their booths used as collateral. The lending term is up to one year with a yearly rate of 10% for the first three months.

Management boards of 36 traditional markets and commercial centers including three wholesales markets on Tuesday signed credit agreements with Sacombank branches. Right after the signing ceremony, staff members of Sacombank will come to every market to instruct traders to apply for loans and to receive the applications from them, Dao said.

Minh of the central bank said local banks now are ready to provide loans to companies, explaining the central bank has directed lenders to promptly support enterprises.

However, the disbursement pace still depends on local enterprises as many firms are hesitant to take out loans given the current mounting inventories and tightened lending conditions.

The VND200-trillion credit package that local lenders have set aside for companies to prepare for the upcoming Lunar New Year has had over VND77 trillion disbursed as of now, Minh said.

A number of banks have relaxed lending conditions for vendors at traditional markets, taking the vendors? stands as collateral, he noted. The lenders are working with authorities of markets to find borrowers as well, he said.

George readies Spartans for unfamiliar NCAA Tournament opponent

By Matt Sheehan | Published 12 hours ago

dmm_vbl_volleyball01_102012d

Head coach Cathy George talks with the her team during the volleyball game against Ohio State Oct. 20, 2012 at Jenison Field House. MSU lost the game 3-1 and is set to play against Indiana on Oct. 26. Danyelle Morrow/The State News

When the MSU volleyball team found out they were slated to play San Diego in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Spartans didn?t know very much about their next opponent.

So little, in fact, that most people at the viewing party were unsure of little more than the geographic location of their tournament foe.

The team that plays in the West Coast Conference held a lot of mystery, but head coach Cathy George still knows the bare basics about San Diego (21-6 overall, 13-3 WCC) heading into the team?s NCAA Tournament matchup.

?San Diego is a very defensive-minded team, and we knew that right off the get-go,? George said.

Some other quick facts that the Spartans (23-9, 11-9) found out early was how successful of a season their upcoming opponent has had. After compiling a 13-3 record in their conference, the Toreros claimed a share of the WCC title after a win over then-No. 13 Brigham Young.

Since finding out the pairings on Sunday, the Spartans had three days to scout and get a better idea of the squad from ?Anchorman? Ron Burgundy?s home town.

?They definitely are led by their middle attack and (junior middle hitter Katie Hoekman), and they really have a lot of balance in their offense,? George said.

The Toreros also are known for their offensive balance, as five players average more than two kills per set.

Another discovery that the Spartans found is that San Diego plays an identical style to them, playing in a 6-2 system, which allows for six players to act as hitters while two others act as setters. The style is conducive to well-rounded players with multiple skill sets on the floor, combining dynamic talent with general versatility.

Junior outside hitter Lauren Wicinski believes that MSU is the only team in the Big Ten to run that system, and also mentioned that San Diego plays a different variation of the style than the Spartans do.

?We know they run a 6-2 like us, so they are very similar to us, but their blocking is a little bit different than what we do,? Wicinski said. ?They play a little different of a style than us, but they are going to have to get used to our style as well.?

Despite not going up against a lot of teams that run a 6-2, sophomore libero Kori Moster said that the Spartans will not have to make a lot of adjustments during the match against San Diego.

?That?s the beauty of our system,? Moster said. ?We really don?t have to change our game plan in order to exploit a lot of the teams that we play.?

The Spartans head out to Los Angeles to take on the Toreros on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at UCLA?s New Pauley Pavilion.

Obama says debt-cutting deal can be reached soon

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Wednesday he believes that members of both parties can reach a "framework" on a debt-cutting deal before Christmas, making his case with a mix of optimism and pressure on congressional Republicans to keep tax rates from rising on the middle class.

Obama, pushing ahead with his campaign to increase revenue by hiking taxes on wealthier Americans, was joined by about a dozen middle-class Americans at a White House event in the midst of negotiation on how to avoid a so-called fiscal cliff at year's end when across-the-board tax hikes and steep spending cuts kick in.

"I am ready and able and willing and excited to go ahead and get this issue resolved in bipartisan fashion so that American families, American businesses have some certainty going into next year," Obama said.

He took special note of reports that some Republicans have expressed a willingness to extend the current expiring tax rates for households earning less than $250,000. Conservative Oklahoma GOP Rep. Tom Cole told GOP colleagues in a private meeting on Tuesday that it's better to extend tax cuts for 98 percent of taxpayers than engage in a prolonged fight that risks increasing taxes on everyone. Cole is a longtime GOP loyalist and a confidant of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

"I'm glad to see, if you've been reading the papers lately, that more and more Republicans in Congress seem to be agreeing with this idea that we should have a balanced approach," Obama said, noting that the Senate has already passed legislation to extend current rates to those middle class taxpayers.

"The Democrats in the House are ready to vote for that same bill today," he said. "If we can get a few House Republicans to agree as well, I'll sign this bill as soon as Congress sends it my way. I've got to repeat: I've got a pen. I'm ready to sign it."

He made an appeal to the public to pressure Congress, arguing that similar efforts late last year to extend a payroll tax cut resulted in congressional passage.

"When the American people speak loudly enough, lo and behold, Congress listens," he said.

While expressing confidence that he and Congress could strike a bargain for a "framework in the coming weeks,"

Obama says we need to "approach this problem with the middle-class in mind."

The president is urging the public to pressure Congress through social media, pointing to (hashtag)My2K on Twitter ? a reference to the estimated $2,200 tax increase a typical middle-class family of four would see if the Bush tax cuts expire.

The president is also meeting with corporate executives at the White House on Wednesday and then traveling to Pennsylvania on Friday to push for upper income bracket earners to pay higher tax rates. It's part of a campaign to pressure Republicans in Congress to support raising taxes on the wealthy.

Description

Letter writing has a history that goes back thousands of years. A few surviving letters suggest it was common practice to write letters to the dead in ancient Egypt. Some of these letters were written on bowls found in Egyptian tombs. The letters often asked for help from the departed with some problem the writers were having.?

For hundreds of years, or at least since pens and paper became commonplace, people who wanted to get in touch with other people separated by distance had only one way to do it: they wrote letters, the only means of long-distance communication, at least until the invention of the telegraph in the 19th century. Beginning with Mr. Morse's innovation, modern communication technologies have slowly but all too surely eroded that necessity, first rendering letter writing one option among many and then merely a quaint habit.?

A quaint habit, that, in this overwhelming world of unmediated and unstoppable technology, have perhaps been forgotten and thrown into the abyss. Don't you miss it, the personal touch, the effort it took the writer to pen down his/her thoughts so delicately? Maybe we miss letters at least a little because we miss the world, the blessedly?to our eye at least?uncomplicated world where letters were commonplace by necessity. Though it's been eclipsed by new technologies, there is nothing as valuable or revelatory as a good letter.

So start sending all your love, thoughts, hugs and kisses the romantic, old-fashioned, unique way - through letters and start sealing your envelopes with that very special stamp!
