Colorado college sues over birth control provision

DENVER (AP) -- Colorado Christian University has a filed a lawsuit challenging the Barack Obama administration's health care legislation requirement that the morning-after pill be provided by health insurance plans.

The emergency contraception pill that can prevent pregnancy and can be taken the day after having unprotected sex is considered tantamount to abortion by the suburban Denver, multidenominational school, which has 3,900 students.

The Washington, D.C.-based Becket Fund for Religious Liberty says it filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court Thursday on the Lakewood school's behalf. The suit challenges the requirement that all federal-government-approved contraception be provided under the Affordable Care Act, including the morning-after pill.

The group also is representing North Carolina's Belmont Abbey College, a Catholic college, which says the law's exemption for religious employers doesn't cover the school.

Sami Yusuf Supports WFP In The Horn Of Africa With "Forgotten Promises?

Multi-talented recording artist Sami Yusuf has released his new single ?Forgotten Promises? to help the UN World Food Programme (WFP) provide assistance to millions of drought-affected people in the Horn of Africa.

?Sami Yusuf has gracefully dedicated his voice to the voiceless people in the Horn of Africa,? said Ashraf Hamouda, WFP?s Head of Partnership and Business Development for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf. ?They are counting on people like him to tell the world about their silent suffering.?

Yusuf, a WFP Celebrity Partner, will donate the entire proceeds of his new single to help WFP sustain and scale-up its relief efforts in the Horn of Africa, which has been struck by the worst drought it has seen in 60 years.

?Forgotten Promises? is the backbone of the ?LiveFeed? campaign, an initiative to raise awareness and funds to help end hunger in the devastated Horn of Africa through music. The slogan of the campaign, which was rolled out online this week, is ?Listen. Help.?

?Today, the crisis Horn of Africa is no longer on the front pages, but children, mothers and entire families continue to feel the effects of the drought. Organizations like WFP are counting on our support to save more lives,? said Yusuf. ?This is precisely what my new song is about: we have a moral duty to help save lives; we can?t just forget our promise.?

People can contribute to WFP by downloading the song or by making a direct donation online at www.livefeedafrica.org. The song costs US $0.99 to download?enough to feed two people in the Horn of Africa. Donations can also be made at www.wfp.org/donate/hoa_livefeed.

The ?LiveFeed? campaign was developed by international advertising firm JWT and sponsored by UAE-based conglomerate Al Aroud Group and RUS Aviation.

?I see the ?LiveFeed? campaign as not just another charity project, but as a lifetime pledge to help bring awareness and end hunger in the Horn of Africa,? Yusuf told his fans through his blog.

The CD version of ?Forgotten Promises? will hit music stands across the Middle East in the first week of January 2012. In the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt and Jordan, Virgin Megastores, one of many stores to sell the single, will waive its fees in order to increase donations to WFP.

The UK-based Yusuf will perform in Dubai for the first time in the beginning of next year to promote the ?LiveFeed? campaign.

Drought in the Horn of Africa, coupled with conflict in Somalia, has affected over 13 million people. Since July, WFP has reached 7.9 million people with direct food assistance in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and Uganda. WFP aims to reach almost 11 million people in the coming months.

In addition to the US patent for an organic sensor, Fujifilm filed a similar patent in Japan (2011-253861). Here are some more details from the Japanese patent application (Google translation):

As a solid state image pickup device, a photoelectric conversion part is arranged in two dimensions in a semiconductor, it is considered as a pixel, and the flat-surface type photo detector which performs charge transfer and read-out by the CCD circuit or a CMOS circuit is widely used in the signal generated by photoelectric conversion in each pixel. That in which the photodiode part to which the PN junction was generally used for the conventional photoelectric conversion part into semiconductors, such as Si, was formed is used.

In recent years, while multi pixel-ization progresses, pixel size is small, the area of a photodiode part becomes small, and the sensitivity lowering which is decline in a numerical aperture, the decline in condensing efficiency, and its result has been problem. The solid state image pickup device which has the organic photoelectric conversion layer using the organic material as the technique of raising a numerical aperture etc. is examined.

Commentary: Seasons in a Turbulent Year (Time.com)

"To every thing there is a season," proclaims the Book of Ecclesiastes. Using that biblical verse as a prism, 2011 achieves, if not quite a scriptural vision, then a poetic imperative. We have had the Arab Spring; the Summer of Europe's Indignation; Autumn was Occupied across the globe; and now, perhaps there is the onset of a long Russian Winter. Regime change swayed to the same rhythms as the seasons.

The meteorology of 2011 extended to an Indian Summer (the height of Anna Hazare's anticorruption campaign, which paralyzed New Delhi) and a yearlong Chinese deep freeze -- though it's always icy weather when it comes to democracy in the People's Republic. The only real warming Beijing has had recently was way back in 1989, when it was Spring in Tiananmen Square. (See "TIME's Person of the Year: The Protester.")

These designations, of course, do not strictly follow equinox and solstice. The Arab Spring began at the tail end of the fall of 2010, with the self-immolation of the Tunisian street vendor Mohammed Bouazizi on Dec. 17, four days before the official beginning of winter, a full season away from spring. The indignados first put their outrage on display in Spain on May 15, with Europe fully warming to their sentiments only later in the summer as tear gas wafted across central Athens and riots broke out in disparate districts of London. The beginning of the Occupy movement almost coincided with the start of the fall -- but it was mostly evicted a month before the season ended. As for the Russian winter, well ... it's still technically autumn.

But there is resonance when we associate certain revolutions with specific seasons. Spring, for example, cast an optimistic light on the Arab revolts. Indeed, the Arab Spring is known in its own region as the Arab Awakening. But is that not what spring is -- an awakening, a rebirth? And does not the word uprising, almost pictographically, bring to the mind's eye a germinating seed? Spring is hoping that the best is yet to come. (See photos of the Occupy Wall Street movement.)

As bright as it is, summer is ambivalent, with an abundance of both light and fire. Perhaps it was the right time of year for Europe's down-and-out youth to see things for what they were, leading to boiling-hot outrage and indignation. Summer is the season of torpor in the continent. But the heat can kill.

The cooling down that comes with autumn signals transition and suited the fate of the Occupy movement, at least in its first manifestation. While there were moments of peppery confrontation over territory, the Occupiers from Wall Street to Oakland, Calif., and from Los Angeles to London seemed impermanent. Even as many fretted about the rigors of January in the parks and squares they occupied, their lack of philosophical cohesion contributed to their melting away weeks before the arrival of winter.

As for winter, it is the knee-jerk metaphor for anything Russian. But in this case, perhaps reflecting the cycle that began with the Arab Awakening, an omen of hope can be detected. For spring must follow winter, even in the Russia of Vladimir Putin. (See photos of protests and counterprotests in Russia.)

But hold on. These are animistic projections, born of our pathetic fallacy that somehow the cosmos reflects and echoes what humanity feels. Definitions meld into one another when they shouldn't. Reality, however, quickly disabuses us of these notions -- and not just through equinoctial calculations. Occupy has transformed not transitioned away with the fall. And the Arab Spring is now the Arab Year. It has outlasted its schedule by many months. Libya's internal brawl extended it into the summer and fall; and Syria is dragging it into a bloody winter. Meanwhile, Egypt has realized that its revolution is incomplete. The awakening has lost its spring. In 2012, we will need a clutch of fresh metaphors.

Perhaps the significance of the seasons of 2011 will be gnawed away by think tanks and historians. But, right now, as it comes to an end, 2011 continues to resound like an epic. It was a year in which the cataclysms were more than political, with tsunamis and floods and earthquakes. But when men and women decide that it is time to brave revolution, are they not manifesting some cosmic imperative as powerful as those acts of God? Their deeds should be commemorated for all seasons.

Shape, fit of reproductive organs evolve quickly and in concert, leaving size behind

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? Believed critical for determining which individuals can -- or cannot -- successfully reproduce with each other, genitalia not only figure prominently in the origin of new species, but are also typically the first type of trait to change as new species form.

Today, new international research led by Indiana University shows that as populations and species diversify, the exact shape and fit of genitalia steals the show over size.

In data gathered from populations isolated for less than 50 years, to species separated for millions of years, researchers studying scarab beetles have shown that both male and female genitalia have evolved extremely rapidly and have done so along parallel timetables. But most surprisingly, this codivergence occurred much faster in, or was even restricted to, genital shape rather than size.

"Parallel evolutionary divergence in male and female genitalia was something scientists long suspected or assumed, but we've had little or no data to support this assumption," said lead author Armin Moczek, an associate professor in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Biology. "But to see that this parallel divergence is so much faster for genital shape than size is a big surprise."

Too much focus in past research on sizes, rather than shapes of genitalia -- which is much harder to measure in arthropods -- may have misled past research in judging how genitalic evolution may enable diverging populations to evolve into separate species unable to hybridize.

Just as interesting is the remarkably short time frame -- as short as populations being separated by 50 years -- that would support the notion that it may be surprisingly easy for the genitalia of males and females to evolve concomitantly, and for males and females of different populations to diverge from each other to a degree approximating what is normally seen only between species separated for more than 10,000 years.

"If it is correct that such divergences aid in establishing reproductive isolation -- something we did not test, but which is widely assumed -- then by extension this finding suggests that evolving new species, or at least getting populations started in the process, may be much easier and faster than we generally assume," Moczek said.

In this research, the team examined the female genital tract and the male copulatory organs of eight populations of five different species of Onthophagus beetles, including three populations in the Eastern U.S., Western Australia and Eastern Australia which were established from an ancestral Mediterranean population in the 1970s as part of a biocontrol program.

The researchers focused on male and female genitalic parts that interact physically during copulation -- the female pygidium, a moveable plate that provides grooves and pits that serve as anchor points for the correct positioning of male genitalia, and the male parameres, part of the male copulatory organ, which includes projections that fit into said grooves and pits of the female pygidium. The research team then examined how shapes and sizes of these interacting female and male copulatory structures had diverged across populations and species using landmark-based geometric morphometric tools, a key methodology that enabled the team to examine differences in shape irrespective of differences in size.

"Once we compared the patterns of divergence across sexes we found that the relative sizes of male and female copulatory organs do evolve, but do so independent of each other. But for genital shape, we found a striking signature of parallel divergence, suggesting that male and female copulatory structures that are linked mechanically during copulation may diverge in concert with respect to their shapes," Moczek said. "Our results also suggest that genital divergence in general, and co-divergence of male and female genital shape in particular, can evolve over an extraordinarily short time frame."

The National Science Foundation's support of Moczek's research in the evolutionary developmental biology of horned beetles has provided much of the infrastructure that enabled this study.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) ? Challenging Newt Gingrich's claim to South Carolina, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney charged into the state Friday with a key endorsement from the tea party-aligned governor, a packed campaign schedule and plans to start airing TV ads in the early primary state.

The show of force by Romney was a clear signal he intends to compete aggressively in a state that stymied him in 2008 and that Gingrich has made a cornerstone of his own campaign.

"It's a real kickoff of a major portion of our campaign," Romney told reporters after accepting an endorsement from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. "I want to win in South Carolina."

While Romney was planting his flag in a Gingrich stronghold, the former House speaker from neighboring Georgia spent the day off the campaign trail, with a book-signing near Washington and private family events in the capital city.

On Friday and in the previous night's debate, Romney steered clear of pointed attacks on Gingrich, entering the final sprint to the Jan. 3 leadoff Iowa caucuses with an air of confidence after a week of assailing Gingrich's leadership, judgment and temperament. That pivot suggested the Romney camp believes Gingrich's recent rise in opinion polls may have leveled off and Romney can campaign closer to his early stance as the all-but-inevitable nominee.

The New Hampshire primary follows one week after Iowa, then comes South Carolina on Jan. 21. While Romney was still in Iowa on Friday, Haley announced she was supporting him as the best Republican candidate to take on President Barack Obama in the battle for the White House next year.

South Carolina wasn't kind to Romney in 2008. He spent millions here only to come in fourth after disappointing losses in Iowa and New Hampshire. Critics suggested his Mormon faith caused problems with the state's significant conservative Christian vote.

On Friday, Haley argued that her state was past all that. "South Carolina just elected a 38-year-old Indian female for governor," said Haley, who was raised Sikh and converted to Christianity. "What the people of South Carolina care about is values and family and faith."

Not that Friday was all smooth sailing for Romney.

After more than a week of criticizing Gingrich as a loose cannon likely to be savaged by Democrats, Romney opened himself to similar complaints by saying he didn't understand Medicaid until he started working in government. One of the principal avenues of criticism against Romney is that he's spent his life among the privileged and is out-of-touch.

"You know, I have to admit I didn't know all the differences between these things before I got into government," Romney said, referring to the federal-state health care program for the poor, at a campaign stop in Iowa.

Romney later told reporters traveling with him to South Carolina that he understood the program but hadn't quite grasped how it was funded. He called his earlier comment a "self-deprecating understatement."

Meanwhile, he had no harsh words for Gingrich ? seeming content to leave that to his fellow Republican rivals and a political action committee that supports Romney. They have gone after Gingrich aggressively since he claimed the lead in national and Iowa polls this month.

The closest Romney came Friday was a veiled reference to the former congressional leader and longtime Washington consultant.

"What concerns me is that we have in Washington, D.C., a class of people who spent their whole time in Washington," Romney said.

His introductory South Carolina TV spot is upbeat.

The ad cost is modest, just $65,000 on cable television this week and next. But it signals an effort to cut into Gingrich's South Carolina showing heading into the bigger Florida primary, set for Jan. 31.

Romney was confident and relaxed campaigning Friday, traveling with his wife, Ann, and bringing reporters along on the campaign's charter flights for the first time this year.

Gingrich is still facing withering criticism from Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Romney also hopes to slow Gingrich heading into New Hampshire, a must-win state for Romney, who was governor in next-door Massachusetts. Romney, who has led comfortably in New Hampshire, began airing a new ad there featuring his conversations with New Englanders concerned about the economy.

Romney already had set aside campaign money to step up his South Carolina effort, although the focus will probably remain on advertising, not additional campaign staff.

No doubt in the works for South Carolina is another Romney ad before the Jan. 21 primary, one featuring Haley.

Haley's ties with Romney run deep. She endorsed him in 2008 when she was in the Legislature. Romney returned the favor when she ran for governor in 2010.

"Neither South Carolina nor the nation can afford four more years of President Obama, and Mitt Romney is the right person to take him on and get America back on track," Haley, a rising GOP star, said after announcing her endorsement on Fox News Channel.

She later told The Associated Press that Romney "has led in making decisions," a point Romney stresses in suggesting his decades in business and term as governor qualify him most for the GOP nomination.

Romney has focused heavily on winning New Hampshire's primary on Jan. 10. But he has been spending time, too, in Iowa, where he finished a disappointing second to Arkansas' Mike Huckabee after spending $10 million on his 2008 Iowa campaign.

The candidates ? except for Gingrich ? were making final pitches to voters on Friday before people begin focusing on the holidays.

Bachmann and Texas Gov. Rick Perry were taking their argument that Gingrich isn't conservative enough to lead the party to Iowa voters on separate bus tours in the state's conservative but lightly populated northwest.

Although Gingrich was off the trail, his campaign drew unwanted attention after two New Hampshire Republicans alleged in complaints filed with state authorities that they had received illegal political telephone calls from the Gingrich operation.

New Hampshire law prevents political campaigns from using recorded political messages, or "robo-calls," to contact residents who are registered on a national do-not-call list.

Gingrich's campaign denied wrongdoing.

National Guard presence at border to be reduced (AP)

WASHINGTON ? When the number of National Guard troops stationed at the Mexican border is reduced next year, their duties are expected to shift from being on the border to flying above it.

About 1,200 troops now help Border Patrol agents spot illegal border crossers and human and drug smugglers. The office of Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, said Tuesday that number will be reduced. It is unclear how many troops will remain.

A federal official briefed on the new strategy said the reduced force will focus their efforts on aerial surveillance. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plan has not been announced.

Lt. Col. Robert L. Ditchey, a Defense Department spokesman, said officials are still working out details of the future of Guard troops at the border.

'Label-free' imaging tool tracks nanotubes in cells, blood for biomedical research

ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2011) ? Researchers have demonstrated a new imaging tool for tracking structures called carbon nanotubes in living cells and the bloodstream, which could aid efforts to perfect their use in biomedical research and clinical medicine.

The structures have potential applications in drug delivery to treat diseases and imaging for cancer research. Two types of nanotubes are created in the manufacturing process, metallic and semiconducting. Until now, however, there has been no technique to see both types in living cells and the bloodstream, said Ji-Xin Cheng, an associate professor of biomedical engineering and chemistry at Purdue University.

The imaging technique, called transient absorption, uses a pulsing near-infrared laser to deposit energy into the nanotubes, which then are probed by a second near-infrared laser.

The researchers have overcome key obstacles in using the imaging technology, detecting and monitoring the nanotubes in live cells and laboratory mice, Cheng said.

"Because we can do this at high speed, we can see what's happening in real time as the nanotubes are circulating in the bloodstream," he said.

Findings are detailed in a research paper posted online Dec. 4 in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

The imaging technique is "label free," meaning it does not require that the nanotubes be marked with dyes, making it potentially practical for research and medicine, Cheng said.

"It's a fundamental tool for research that will provide information for the scientific community to learn how to perfect the use of nanotubes for biomedical and clinical applications," he said.

The conventional imaging method uses luminescence, which is limited because it detects the semiconducting nanotubes but not the metallic ones.

The nanotubes have a diameter of about 1 nanometer, or roughly the length of 10 hydrogen atoms strung together, making them far too small to be seen with a conventional light microscope. One challenge in using the transient absorption imaging system for living cells was to eliminate the interference caused by the background glow of red blood cells, which is brighter than the nanotubes.

The researchers solved this problem by separating the signals from red blood cells and nanotubes in two separate "channels." Light from the red blood cells is slightly delayed compared to light emitted by the nanotubes. The two types of signals are "phase separated" by restricting them to different channels based on this delay.

Researchers used the technique to see nanotubes circulating in the blood vessels of mice earlobes.

"This is important for drug delivery because you want to know how long nanotubes remain in blood vessels after they are injected," Cheng said. "So you need to visualize them in real time circulating in the bloodstream."

The structures, called single-wall carbon nanotubes, are formed by rolling up a one-atom-thick layer of graphite called graphene. The nanotubes are inherently hydrophobic, so some of the nanotubes used in the study were coated with DNA to make them water-soluble, which is required for them to be transported in the bloodstream and into cells.

The researchers also have taken images of nanotubes in the liver and other organs to study their distribution in mice, and they are using the imaging technique to study other nanomaterials such as graphene.

The paper was written by doctoral student Ling Tong; postdoctoral research associate Yuxiang Liu; doctoral students Bridget D. Dolash and Yookyung Jung; biomedical engineering research scientist Mikhail N. Slipchenko; Donald E. Bergstrom, the Walther Professor of Medicinal Chemistry; and Cheng.

The research is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Lil Wayne, A$AP Rocky Drop Best Mixtapes of 2011

Mixtape Daily also taps free selections from Wale, Young Jeezy, Future and more in our year-end awards.
By Rob Markman

Mixtape Daily: Best of 2011
Mixtapes are one of the key things that separate hip-hop from every other musical genre. While rock, country and pop fans have to wait until a record label releases an album from their favorite artist, rap fans have developed a unique connection with their fave MCs thanks to the availability of free mixtapes.

In recent years, the free online releases — some of which are even made to sound like albums — increasingly help to raise an MC's stock. 2011 brought on high-profile tapes from veterans like Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy, while newcomers like Future and A$AP Rocky used their tapes to establish their fanbases.

While hundreds of tapes were released this year, Mixtape Daily breaks down the 10 Best of 2011, in no particular order.

2 Chainz's Codeine Cowboy
Every good artist knows the art of reinvention and in 2011, no rapper rebranded himself as effectively as 2 Chainz. Once known as Tity Boy from the Atlanta group Playaz Circle, 2 Chainz cleaned up his act with a name change and a tape to go with it. Codeine Cowboy established the underground ATL veteran as a hitmaker thanks to his infectious money ode "Spend It."

Key Tracks: "Spend It," "LaLa" (featuring Busta Rhymes) and "Kitchen" (featuring Young Jeezy and Pusha T)

A$AP Rocky's LiveLoveA$AP
Before he even dropped his debut mixtape, Harlem MC A$AP Rocky inked a deal worth $3 million with Polo Ground/ RCA. When Rocky released LiveLoveA$AP on Halloween, the N.Y. newcomer with the Southern sensibility had proven that his breakouts "Purple Swag" and "Peso" were no flukes.

Key Tracks: "Peso," "Trilla" and "Brand New Guy" featuring Schoolboy Q

Big K.R.I.T.'s Returnof4Eva
Most artists use a combination of original tracks and freestyles over well-known beats on their mixtapes, but producer/MC Big K.R.I.T. has always separated himself from the pack by producing his own material. Following the success of 2010's breakout K.R.I.T. Wuz Here, the 2011 XXL Freshman delivered once again with Returnof4Eva.

Key Tracks: "Country Sh-- (Remix)" (featuring Ludacris and Bun B), "Rotation" and "Dreamin' "

Future's True Story
Sure, Future dropped a few mixtapes before True Story, but with catchy tracks like "Magic" and "Tony Montana," how could fans not be checking for the "Racks"-featured rapper?

Key Tracks: "Magic" and "Tony Montana"

Lil Wayne's Sorry 4 the Wait
How considerate is Lil Wayne? After his label pushed back the release of his super-hyped Tha Carter IV, Weezy decided to give his fans a little something to make up for the delay. The aptly titled Sorry 4 the Wait found Tunechi reworking songs like Kreayshawn's "Gucci Gucci" and Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" over the course of 12 tracks. After a ton of mixtape downloads and double-platinum sales of Tha Carter IV, it's clear that fans have accepted Wayne's apology.

Key Tracks: "Sure Thing (Freestyle)," "Gucci Gucci (Freestyle)" and "Tunechi's Back"

Ludacris' 1.21 Gigawatts: Back to the First Time
Ludacris is a rapper's rapper. Don't let his new line of Soul headphones, Conjure liquor or Hollywood movie roles fool you: Mr. Lova Lova takes MC'ing very seriously and it shows on 1.21 Gigawatts. Not only does Luda experiment with new flows on "Rich & Flexin' " and "Muthaf---a Can U Buy That," he wages war against Drake and Big Sean on "Bada Boom."

Key Tracks: "Bada Boom," "Shake and Fries" (featuring Gucci Mane) and "Rich & Flexin' " (featuring Waka Flocka Flame)

Meek Mill's Dreamchasers
After making his mark on Maybach Music's Self Made compilation with standout tracks like "Tupac Back," and "Ima Boss," many expected Meek Mill to drop his debut album right away. But rather than rush, Meek held fans over with his Dreamchasers tape. It's quite the appetizer. Over the course of 19 tracks, the Philly MC gives fans a mix of everything: There are hits, some freestyles and even an intricate story rhyme on "Tony Story." Well done.

Key Tracks: "House Party" (featuring Young Chris), "Work" (featuring Rick Ross) and "Tony Story"

Pusha T's Fear of God
As one-half of the Clipse, Push has always been a highly regarded lyrcist, but stepping out as a soloist can be tricky. On his first work without his brother Malice, Pusha Ton showed and proved, so much so that after Fear of God was released as a free mixtape on the Net, it was re-released at retail.

Key Tracks: "My God," "Feeling Myself" and "Raid" (featuring 50 Cent and Pharrell)

Wale's The Eleven One Eleven Theory
After getting his Twitter following to 1 million, Wale dropped his The Eleven One Eleven Theory mixtape to hype up the release of his sophomore album Ambition. When the tape first dropped online, it crashed a few file-sharing sites. And once listeners were able to download and digest Wale's work, it quickly became a fan favorite.

Key Tracks: "Bait," "Chain Music" and "Ambitious Girl 2"

Young Jeezy's The Real Is Back
Young Jeezy's TM 103 (due this month) saw a series of delays, but that doesn't mean that the Snowman wasn't working. On his The Real Is Back mixtape, Jeezy squashed the beef with DJ Drama and collaborated on one of the year's best. Through 21 tracks, Jeezy delivers his unique brand of trap music as only he can.

Key Tracks:"Win Win," "Rollin" (featuring Fabolous), "Run DMC" (featuring Freddie Gibbs) and "Ballin' " featuring Lil Wayne

V-moda introduces affordable, earphone-like earplugs (Digital Trends)

vmoda-earplugs

It?s important to protect your hearing. You?d think that could go without saying, but apparently not. The New York times recently reported that one in five teenagers suffer from at least slight hearing loss. That?s up 30 percent from a decade ago. We suspect loud music has something to do with it, be it sourced from a loud concert, a club or cranked up headphones. But teens aren?t the only ones at risk. Musicians, construction workers, airport ground crews and anyone else working in a noisy environment also need to protect your ears. ?

The obvious solution is earplugs but, generally speaking, earplugs suck. Cheap earplugs either don?t fit or they block out too much of everything, including what you actually need to hear. Custom earplugs can cost a fortune, making them an unlikely solution for many.

A great earplug would be available in several different sizes so that it can fit just about anyone?s ears. It would also block out the entire frequency range evenly so that, essentially, you hear the original sound, just quieter-kind of like turning the volume knob down on the world around you-this is essential for musicians who need to hear what they are playing and a matter of safety for others. ?Ah yes, we also think a pair should cost $20 or less.

Well, wouldn?t you know it, ?V-moda, best known for its urban-style headphones, claims they have created just such an earplug. The Faders earplugs, marketed under V-moda?s Ear Armor division, appear to be an earphone, minus the drivers. They are made of metal, come in three different colors, are packed with four sizes of silicone eartips and equipped with a ?lanyard? (earphone cable?) so they don?t go missing. V-MODA claims the Faders earplugs reduce ambient noise by 12dB and evenly across the frequency spectrum. The price, for now anyway, is just $15 at Vmoda.com. And, for the time being, V-moda says it will toss a pair in for free along with any order over $50.

We have a set coming in for evaluation and will be sure to let you know if they are as effective as V-moda claims, but can you really go wrong for $15?

S. African chain drops 'last dictator' commercial (AP)

HARARE, Zimbabwe ? A South African fast food and restaurant chain said Thursday it has withdrawn advertising that depicts the aging, authoritarian president of Zimbabwe as "the last dictator standing."

Nando's South Africa said in an announcement it noted with concern "political reaction" in Zimbabwe, including threats against managers, staff and customers at its spicy chicken franchise outlets across the country.

A television commercial shows Robert Mugabe dining alone at Christmas, his empty table set for departed dictators including Moammar Gadhafi.

Nando's says it will no longer air the advertising on South African television, which is beamed by satellite to tens of thousands of Zimbabwean subscribers.

On Tuesday, a militant youth group loyal to Mugabe called for a boycott and other unspecified punitive action against the chain unless the 60-second commercial was dropped and an apology made to Mugabe, 87, who led Zimbabwe to independence in 1980.

The announcement said the food chain took the threats seriously.

"We feel strongly that this is the prudent step to take in a volatile climate and believe that no TV commercial is worth risking the safety of Nando's staff and customers." it said.

To the soundtrack of Mary Hopkin's "Those Were the Days," the commercial shows an actor playing Mugabe reminiscing about his times with former dictators. It portrays him and Gadhafi engaging in a water-pistol fight, with Gadhafi wielding a golden AK-47 water pistol.

The ersatz Mugabe also makes sand angels with Iraq's Saddam Hussein, sings karaoke with Chairman Mao, and holds overthrown Ugandan dictator Idi Amin astride a tank in a scene parodying Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in the hit movie "Titanic."

The head of Nando's Zimbabwe franchise said Tuesday it was not informed of the South African television and press campaign, and is independent of them.

Musekiwa Kumbula, corporate affairs director at Innscor Africa, holders of the Nando's franchise in Zimbabwe, said the commercial already widely seen on Zimbabwe websites and shown for the first time on television Wednesday was generated in South Africa for its market and clientele.

The Innscor group "strongly feels the advertisement is insensitive and in poor taste," he said.

It is an offense under Zimbabwe law to insult Mugabe or undermine the authority of his office.

Mugabe once maintained close ties with Gadhafi. But relations became strained over payments for a gasoline deal during acute fuel shortages and shortly before the Libyan leader befriended Western leaders such as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, whom Mugabe harshly criticized for his policies toward Zimbabwe.

Chairman Mao's China helped train Mugabe's guerrillas to end white rule in the former British colony of Rhodesia and Mugabe has been a frequent visitor to China ever since.

Mugabe played host to Saddam Hussein at a world summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in 1986. And though Mugabe was a sharp critic of apartheid-era South African President P.W. Botha ? depicted in the commercial being pushed on a swing by Mugabe ? apartheid South Africa remained Zimbabwe's biggest trading partner.

Business tycoon Ray Kaukonde, a major stockholder in Innscor and a former provincial governor in Mugabe's ZANU-PF party, said the advertising denigrated Mugabe. He called it "a violation of business ethics" and said it was "in total disregard of African values."

Critics, Western governments and rights groups have said Mugabe became increasingly authoritarian and unleashed a decade of violence, vote-rigging and intimidation amid a breakdown of the rule of law after he ordered the seizures of thousands of white-owned farms in 2000.

Human rights activists accuse the militant Mugabe youth group known as Chipangano of forming violent gangs that roam Harare's impoverished townships and seize property from those seen as supporters of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's former opposition party in the nation's fragile 30-month coalition government.

Colo. sheriff tossed in jail named after him

A former "sheriff of the year" has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to deal drugs in exchange for sex. Patrick Sullivan has been an iconic crime fighting figure in Colorado for decades, but tonight he's behind bars. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

?

By The Associated Press

A former U.S. national sheriff of the year found himself in a jail that was named for him, accused of offering methamphetamine in exchange for sex from a male acquaintance.

Colorado lawman Patrick Sullivan, 68 ? handcuffed, dressed in an orange jail uniform and walking with a cane ? watched Wednesday as a judge raised his bail amount to a half-million dollars and sent him to the Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility.

The current sheriff, Grayson Robinson, who worked as undersheriff for Sullivan from 1997 until he took over the job in 2002, said the department was shocked and saddened at his arrest.

Robinson said the case is still under investigation, including where and how Sullivan might have gotten the drugs. He declined to say if authorities suspect Sullivan of using drugs, or if others might be charged.

Sullivan's arrest has many in suburban Denver's Arapahoe County where he held sway for nearly two decades wondering what happened to the tough-as-nails lawman they once knew ? a law officer known for his heroism in saving two deputies and for his concern about teenage drug use.

"This isn't the Pat I know," said Peg Ackerman, a lobbyist for the County Sheriffs of Colorado who often worked with him on legislation. She said he was concerned about drug use in schools and was a chief of security at a school district.

At the brief hearing, Judge William Sylvester told Sullivan not to contact anyone involved in the case.

Sullivan's attorney, Kevin McGreevy, did not return calls seeking comment.

Sullivan came to the attention of law enforcement after an Oct. 4 call to authorities from a home in Centennial, according to an arrest affidavit. The deputy who responded had worked for Sullivan and knew who he was.

After investigating further, the deputy learned from two confidential informants that Sullivan was dealing meth but would sell it only if they had sex with him, the document stated. He was arrested after police set up a sting at a home.

Deputies found that Sullivan had handed someone a bag of meth and had another bag on him when he was searched, according to the affidavit. Both bags weighed less than a gram.

Sullivan served as sheriff from 1984 until his retirement in 2002.

In 2002, then-U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo praised him on his retirement, citing Sullivan for promoting homeland security and for being named Sheriff of the Year by the National Sheriff's Association.

In 1989, Sullivan was hailed as a hero. During a gunman's rampage, he rescued two deputies after crashing his truck through a fence and protecting them while they were loaded into the vehicle.

While those who know Sullivan were puzzled by the news, some said they weren't surprised that a person of his stature could get involved. They said meth users will do almost anything to feed their habit and often hurt others in the process.

"This drug knows no economic, social, professional or occupational boundaries," said state Rep. Ken Summers, who served on a legislative meth task force.

HP chief aims for software revenue leap: report (Reuters)

FRANKFURT (Reuters) ? Hewlett-Packard wants to see a jump in revenues from its software business, the company's chief executive told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

"I want to double or triple our current revenue in software from the current level of $5 billion," Chief Executive Meg Whitman said, without giving a timeline.

Whitman, who was appointed in September to replace Leo Apotheker, said the company had not made a decision on the future of its Palm webOS mobile software platform.

"It is complicated," she was quoted as saying when asked about the future of the unit. "We need a good decision, not a quick one."

Last month sources told Reuters Hewlett-Packard is looking to sell Palm's webOS mobile software platform. The deal could fetch hundreds of millions of dollars but less than the $1.2 billion that HP paid last year.

Former eBay CEO Whitman defended the $12 billion acquisition of British software firm Autonomy, which was closed in October.

The deal, which was the centerpiece of a botched strategy shift that cost ex-chief executive Apotheker his job, was "a good acquisition," Whitman told the paper, in an interview published on Thursday.

"Autonomy has potential and we can turn it into a fast-growing unit," she said.
